A randomized controlled trial published in Frontiers in Nutrition examined whether daily almond consumption improves sleep among adults with poor sleep quality.
Researchers enrolled 175 adults ages 21 to 55, according to the study. Half of the participants consumed 60 grams of raw almonds daily, split between mid-morning and evening snacks, while the control group received a calorie-matched savory snack for 20 weeks.

All participants had poor sleep quality at baseline, according to the study. The almond group ate 60 grams of raw whole almonds per day, approximately 50 almonds, divided into two portions. The control group consumed a calorie-matched savory snack.
Researchers measured sleep quality using self-reported questionnaires and objective overnight polysomnography at the start and end of the 20-week intervention. Blood samples were collected to track changes in melatonin and other biomarkers, the report stated.
The study protocol was designed to test whether almonds’ nutrient content could influence sleep-regulating pathways, the authors reported. By the end of the study, the almond group reported significantly better overall sleep quality scores and higher sleep efficiency, according to the findings. Most objective polysomnography measures did not differ significantly between the two groups, the study stated.
There was a trend toward less nighttime waking in the almond group, and among participants with the largest sleep-score improvements, nighttime waking was significantly reduced. Melatonin levels were higher in the almond group after adjustment; the unadjusted difference between groups did not reach statistical significance.
