A renowned fitness expert has come out supporting the argument that biological male athletes have physical advantages over their female counterparts following a recent incident at a West Virginia track meet that reignited the contentious debate about whether or not transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in the sporting categories of their chosen gender identity.
During the Harrison County Championships for middle schools in northern West Virginia on April 18, five middle school girls refused to compete against Becky Pepper-Jackson, a 13-year-old biological male athlete who has identified as a girl from a very young age, in a shot put competition.
The girls refused to compete against Pepper-Jackson despite an appeals court ruling that blocked a state law which mandates athletes to compete in the category that matches their sex at birth. (Related: WATCH: Female athlete speaks out against transgender agenda ruining women’s sports.)
Records from the Harrison County middle school track championship show that the five girls from Lincoln Middle School are listed with no distance in the shot put competition. Girls from other country middle schools participated in the event, but were no match to Pepper-Jackson.
In response to the incident, fitness guru Jillian Michaels, renowned for her role as a trainer on the reality television program “The Biggest Loser,” has supported the argument that biological male athletes have physical advantages over their female counterparts in a recent segment of “Fox and Friends.”
“You’ve got two competing goals in sports, right? One is inclusion,” said Michaels. “However, the second goal that’s in direct opposition with inclusion, in this instance, is going to be a fair competition.”
“If your overriding priority is going to be fairness over inclusion, you’ve got to turn to the data, and the data irrefutably shows that biological males are 10 to 30 percent stronger, faster, have better endurance, better aerobic capacity across the board,” Michaels explained.
Commenting on the West Virginia situation, Michaels noted that, even though Pepper-Jackson had been on puberty blockers and estrogen since elementary, the athlete still had advantages over biological girls.
“If we defer to the studies … they show that even on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, the decrease in physical performance is trivial. That’s what the data says,” she said referring to a 2021 study published in the renowned peer-reviewed medical journal, the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
“And to give you an example, if you look at a biological male transgender female with grip strength in conjunction with a biological female transgender male – okay, so both of them are on blockers and cross-sex hormones … the biological male’s grip strength was 17 percent greater than the female on testosterone and puberty blockers,” she added.
Michaels has raised concerns regarding transgender participation in sports for some time. Last December, she went on a podcast criticizing policies that allow biological males to compete in women’s sports on the same grounds.
“Sports is biological. It just is, and I think that you’re starting to actually see women get hurt. We’re going to systematically destroy women’s sports,” she warned. “I’m sorry, listen, if you want to be trans, I support you. I want you to have all the same rights that I do.”
“But at the end of the day, someone’s going to get effed here,” Michaels continued. “And if you’re looking at, okay, you’ve got X amount of trans athletes and X amount of women, you’re not going to win this one, right? No one’s coming out unscathed.”
