These lesions are associated with memory loss, balance issues, and slower thinking long before a full-blown stroke occurs.
The mouth is a uniquely vulnerable entry point for pathogens. One dentist not involved in the study, Dr. Allison Wilson, explained that the gums are rich with tiny blood vessels, making it easy for microbes to spread. “They’ve found oral bacteria all over—head to toe—during autopsies. The good news is that this risk factor is largely within your control. The same study found that people who received regular professional dental care had an 81 percent lower chance of having both gum disease and cavities.
